About the group

We draw in cafés, streets, galleries and public spaces across Liverpool. Members work in pencil, pen, watercolour and other media, each with their own approach.

There’s a mix of experience in the group, from people starting out to those who have drawn for years. We meet to practise, compare work and spend time together. There is currently a waiting list for new members.

What is urban sketching?

Urban sketching is drawing on location, from direct observation. A sketch records a place as you experience it: its buildings, people and everyday details.

You can work quickly or take your time, use a pencil or add colour. The aim is to observe and draw what is in front of you, rather than copy a photograph.

What to bring

A sketchbook or some paper, and a pen or pencil. Watercolours are optional. Dress for the weather and bring a portable seat if you need one.

Sketching and wellbeing

Drawing asks you to concentrate on what you can see. Many of us value that time away from screens and other distractions.

Meeting regularly also gives us time with other people who enjoy drawing. You can chat as you work or concentrate on your own sketch.

Everyone’s experience is different. Our meet-ups are a social and creative activity, not a mental health service.
